STORY OF HAYEAGRIVA (हयग्रीव) JAYANTI & UPAKARMA RITUALS. Hayagriva’s incarnation is said to have occurred on this date, so the festival of Hayagriva Jayanti should be celebrated on Shravan Purnima. For those who worship him, this festival is said to be performed regularly. On the day of Shravan Purnima, Bhagwan Hari appeared in the form of Hayeagriva in the Shravan constellation and first sang the Samaveda, which destroys all sins. He was born at the confluence of the Sindhu and Vitasta rivers in the Shravan constellation. Therefore, bathing there on the day of Shravan is said to fulfill all desires. On that day, worship Lord Vishnu, who holds the Sharnga bow, chakra, and mace, properly. After that, listen to the Samagana. This festival should be celebrated in one’s country and home, and Hayagriva should be worshiped, and his mantra should be chanted. Listen to this mantra. At the beginning, add ‘Pranava’ and then the word ‘Namah,’ followed by ‘Bhagavate Dharmaya,’ and then add the fourth case of the word ‘Atmavishodhana’ (Atmavishodhanaya). Finally, use the word ‘Namah’ again to form an eighteen-letter mantra (Om Namo Bhagavate Dharmaya Atmavishodhanaya Namah). This mantra grants all perfections and accomplishes six practices. In the Kali Yuga, its purification should be done with four times additional chanting. By doing this, Hayagriva becomes pleased and grants the desired results. On this full moon day, Raksha Bandhan is also celebrated, which removes all diseases and destroys all inauspiciousness. 𝗨𝗣𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗔 𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗦:- The day of Shravan Purnima is considered the most sacred day because three festivals occur on this day (Raksha Bandhan, Hayagriva Jayanti, and Upakarma). People only know about the Raksha Bandhan festival, but they do not know that today is also the festival of Hayagriva Jayanti and Upakarma (changing the sacred thread). Let’s see what our ancient divine scriptures say. According to the Skanda Purana, Shravan Mahatmya, Chapter 21, on the full moon day of Shravan month, the rituals of Utsarjan and Upakarma are performed. The full moon days of Paush and Magh months are also for Utsarjan rituals, or the first day of Paush or Magh months is prescribed for Utsarjan rituals, or the Rohini constellation is considered auspicious for Utsarjan rituals. It is also appropriate to perform both Utsarjan and Upakarma according to one’s branch at other times. Therefore, the Utsarjan ritual is considered auspicious on the full moon day of Shravan month. For Rigvedis, the Upakarma should be performed on the day when the Shravan constellation is present on the fourteenth, full moon, or first day. Yajurvedis should perform Upakarma on the full moon day, and Samavedis should perform Upakarma on the Hasta constellation. Upakarma should also be performed comfortably during the setting of Venus and Jupiter, but it should not start before this period, according to scholars. It should be done after the period contaminated by eclipses and solstices. Perform Upakarma on the fifth day with the Hasta constellation or on the full moon day of Bhadrapada, according to one’s Grihyasutra. If there is an extra month, it should be done in the pure month. These two rituals are essential and should be performed regularly every year. At the end of Upakarma, one should offer a Sabha Deep in the assembly if the Dwijas are present. The Acharya should accept this lamp or give it to another Brahmin. The method of the lamp is described - fill a vessel made of gold, silver, or copper with a measure of wheat, make a lamp from wheat flour, and light it. The lamp should be filled with ghee or oil and have three wicks. Offer this lamp to a learned Acharya along with a donation and betel leaves. After worshiping the lamp and the Acharya properly, recite this mantra - “With donation and betel leaves, I offer this excellent Sabha Deep to the Deitie of Deities. May my wishes be fulfilled.”
