I'm often asked by kids about to graduate college, how do I choose what career to go into? I think they ask me this because I've seen a lot of different sides... Right after college I went to Wall Street, and by 30 was a senior trader at one of the largest hedge funds in the country. Then I left and started a nonprofit. Then I left that and started a for-profit social enterpise, Everytable, to make nutritious food accessible to all. My answer is simple. Someone once told me that ambition is what you want to get for yourself from the world. Aspiration is what you want to contribute to the world. For me, fulfillment came when I figured out how to put both of those things together. If Everytable succeeds, I'll have helped make the world a more just and equitable place, and will have helped build wealth for our employees and franchisees, while at the same time building wealth for my family. On Wall Street, I've heard from many people who have made a lot of money, and are certainly happy about that, that something is missing. In nonprofits, I've heard from many people who love what they are doing in the world, but are exhausted and beaten down from the constant financial pressure and scraping by. So for me, the answer is to figure out how to do both at the same time.
