@DrNWillburger I wondered if the mud would give up more votives - amazing! Seeing the collection this year at the #MANNapoli was a highlight for me. https://t.co/v4rRmU8RpQ
These fresco portraits featuring two young men holding scrolls were found in the tablinum - the office - of the Casa del Cenacolo in #Pompeii. The tag on the younger boy’s scroll reads ‘Plato’ and the older boy’s reads ‘Homerum’ … 1/ #FrescoFriday

@CDorado75 Great thread! Here’s a gold ‘thunder bolt’ clasp from the Greek galleries at the #MANNapoli. From Canosa, Lagrasta I hypogeum (?), 4th-3rd cent. BCE (inv. 24807).

The woman's off-the-shoulder chiton was originally *yellow* (see her left knee). And Pan's red leg was originally yellowish-brown. What happened? The heat of Vesuvius' pyroclastic flows converted yellow ochre to red ochre, a phenomenon we see in Vesuvian frescoes. 3/

@jymeedole @DocCrom @p_historians @pompeii_sites @roamintheempire @AncientRomeLive @GreekMythComix @DariusAryaDigs Oh, and also, he’s definitely Odysseus, given his pileus cap, beard, reddish hair. Below is another fresco representation of Odysseus from #Pompeii, depicting him discovering Achilles among the women in Lycomedes’ palace on Skyros.

Beautiful painting by Francesco Morelli, depicting a lararium (household shrine) and a fresco with gladiators, probably from a house in the Insula Occidentalis in #Pompeii. Destroyed during bombing in #WWII, and no traces remain.

This arca, or strongbox was found in the atrium of the House of Gaius Vibius Italus in #Pompeii (VII 2, 18) in 1867. Its base of wood is covered with bronze and iron laminae, and large studs conceal the heads of the nails. Note the bronze appliques … 1/

For #InternationalDogDay, these two pups sing the song of their people. 🐕 🎶
#Roman, Imperial age. #MANNapoli, Farnese collection (inv. 2616, 2619). Pretty sure the heads are Renaissance era - it doesn’t say so at the MANN, but they look to have been used as fountains.

Taking that selfie with the Capitoline triad from Cumae - c’mon, Minerva and Juno, squeeze in tight to Jupiter (and stop rolling your eyes!). 🙄🤪🙄

For #FrescoFriday, I have no frescos. Because the ones below are long-gone. They once decorated the Pompeii amphitheater podium, the low walls that separated the spectators from the entertainment. I’ll discuss the gladiator scene separately. #polychromy. 1/

So interesting, running into frescos in different museums that used to be displayed together in an ancient home. I recognized the artist's style immediately when I was at the #MANNapoli, as I had seen the Apollo just a few months before in London.

@HawkeJon @antmoose @cma_greekroman @WittsPat @rogueclassicist @romanarchaeouk @NCDrusus38 A good opportunity to see these two fresco panels together, below, as they would have originally been in the same room in the House of the Dioscuri. On the left, Apollo in the #BritishMuseum, as you say; Saturn on the right, veiled, with his sickle, now at the #MANNapoli.

The male figure on the right wears an Egyptian royal khepresh crown and holds his hands up in a gesture of worship, bringing offerings to the shrine: lotus flowers and a floral garland.

For #MosaicMonday, the‘Plato’s Academy’ mosaic from the villa of T. Siminius Stephanus, outside the Porta del Vesuvio gate, #Pompeii. It shows seven Greek philosophers identifiable by the symbols of their science. *Much* debate about who’s who. 1/

For #WorldLionDay, the Leone Farnese, a 2nd c. CE sculpture of a lion that was probably once part of a funerary monument in Rome. The tradition of using lions in this context started in the 4th c. BCE with the Tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus.
