While the modular concept is super hot right now, it still takes time for any new technology to mature, work out its challenges, and gain traction – modular included.
Leveraging modular or any different tech stack to launch an L2 is pretty easy nowadays. However, projects need to think about how to capture core values. With sequencers in particular, if you hand over all control to a shared pool which has nothing to do with your business, you are no different with another 100+ L2s. So how to build and grow your ecosystem without a backbone of the value layer?
I believe every L2 should have its own native gas token as the first layer to capture value, and then build a sustainable economy around that native gas token. Within this economy, value is anchored with the gas token, consensus is formed via staking the gas token among all the sequencer nodes in the community, and then a contribution-based mining model can be implemented to share and distribute benefits to all participants in this economy.
Without a value anchor, staking a governance token to earn more governance tokens doesn’t make sense.
Staking ETH cannot form the consensus among all the decentralized sequencers for L2s either, because there will always be someone who has more ETH than you to change the consensus. Also, staking ETH won’t bring the security that native gas token staking can bring to L2s.
