She decided to return home to Bethlehem, and knowing her daughters in law would feel obligated to come along, she released them from their commitment. Both were likely in their mid 20s and could easily find a new husband who could keep them safe and secure. Orpah did exactly this and bade Naomi farewell. ”But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. And that Ruth committed to go to a lawless, chaotic nation with a different culture when the safest (and sanest) option was to go home and marry a new man. Ruth is committing herself to a life of poverty and insecurity where godless vagabonds could show up at any instant. I thought feminism was all about women doing what they wanted, free from guilt? And women don’t need a man; they’re all pigs anyway. Why go with your mother in law? Pursue what’s best for YOU? But Ruth left anyway, so great was her love. And when she arrived in Bethlehem, she and Naomi were destitute. A wealthy landowner named Boaz, son of Rahab the prostitute from Jericho, lived in Bethlehem and had a large field. Boaz was a godly man and he obeyed the Mosaic law. Instead of harvesting his entire field for extra profit, Boaz left the corners standing so the poor could come by and glean food from it, free of charge. I thought men were selfish pigs who didn’t truly love religion? And they sought women only as sex objects? Also, red pill, what high value man gives up easy money like this? Boaz noticed Ruth, a young woman gleaning, and soon learned that she lived with the widow Naomi. He was very impressed by a woman who would commit to her mother in law in such a fashion, especially because she had every right to leave after her own husband died. Red pill guys, isn’t Boaz a high value rich man? Shouldn’t he have his pick or virginal Jewish women? Ruth was married 10 years! And she “hit the wall” after age 25! What rich guy wants a woman who had sex with her husband ten years and now is poor? Not to mention, a foreigner!? Boaz fell in love with Ruth rather quickly. He ensured that none of his workers harassed her. And as the story concludes, with some help from Naomi, and a bit of trickery, he became free to marry Ruth while also restoring Naomi’s old property, lifting her from poverty. Did Boaz care that Ruth wasn’t a virgin? That she was foreign? Poor? Of course not. Boaz saw a brave and loyal woman who would be an excellent wife to him. Had he been a red pill man, Boaz would have worried about pair bonding or status or walls…and he would have missed the greatest blessing in life. Had Ruth been a feminist, thinking only if herself and her needs, she would have stayed in Moab. Yet Ruth ended up the great grandmother of King David, and later, an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Love, true love, is selfless devotion to one another. It can’t be found in inherently selfish movements. Only when we love God and seek Him can we also love someone else the way that He does.
