Exclusive interview: Andy Burnham has vowed to keep the state pension triple lock untouched, insisting Labour must honour its manifesto promise to millions of pensioners at a moment of collapsing public trust.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester claims tearing up the manifesto commitment would be a “very damaging thing to do” - defying a growing chorus of voices, including Labour’s own cost of living tsar, calling for it to be ditched.
In a further message to the country’s pensioners, he also said the growing number of older people being drawn into paying income tax through frozen tax thresholds — so-called “fiscal drag” – was an issue that needs “looking at”.
“What I have heard on doorsteps is pensioners saying … the freezing of the personal allowance has dragged more and more pensioners into tax,” Burnham said. “So, I do think you need to look at that issue as well.”

It would be the LDs, no question. Pro-EU, anti-Trump centrist party, they need to sharpen their elbows a bit, lose the stunts, move an inch to the right and they’re well placed to supplant the Tories. All my Tory neighbours went LD this time, they can’t be doing with Reform, they find Badenoch deeply unpersonable and they’re not leaving the ECHR.

An ultra Orthodox man doing his job as a building inspector was working in Slough when he was physically attacked by a total stranger screaming ‘baby killer’ and ‘dirty mother f*cking Jew’ at him.
A friend of his has sent me this video telling me the man is now ‘afraid to leave his area, he is terrified for his life.’
As the most visibly obvious Jews, the community has extra security where they live but are increasingly frightened to leave their neighbourhood.
‘It is devastating that Jewish people can’t go anywhere without a high risk of being attacked,’ I was told.

Multiple reasons to rejoin and we should. What epic foolishness to have left, the economy is scarred, our place in the world diminished. It’s #Moderates flagship policy. No tinkering at the edges, a compete rejoin.
Political leaders shouldn’t be campaigning round the country at this time given the energy crisis. Millions of families are having to alter their lives with astronomical prices at the pump. The best local election message is we get it, we are you too. #Moderates
#Moderates are exactly that - centre-ground, competent people who aren’t tribal or shouty and don’t want to burn the house down. We can work cross-party without nastiness. We have sensible domestic & foreign policy positions. We love our country quietly, no flags up lamp-posts.
I started working on #Moderates. Sadly all the work I put in on X to begin to build the movement is now gone with my original account of 13 years hacked. I stick to positions and like to be able to check past comments and for others to hold me to it. As a Tory or now a Mod!
