▶️ For the first time in history, scientists have analyzed lunar samples from the Moon’s far side, revealing secrets about its formation and evolution.
China’s Chang'e-6 mission has unlocked a new chapter in lunar exploration.
▶️ Formation Story
Launched on May 3, 2024, from Wenchang Space Launch Site, the Chang'e-6 mission marked a historic achievement as the first to retrieve samples from the Moon’s far side.
Landing in the Apollo Basin
within the South Pole-Aitken Basin on June 1, the mission collected 1,935.3 grams of lunar material using a robotic scoop and drill.
After a 53-day journey
the samples returned to Earth on June 25, 2024, landing in Inner Mongolia.
These samples
from one of the solar system’s oldest and largest impact craters, offer a unique opportunity to study the Moon’s geological past and the early solar system.
▶️ Geological Information
The Chang'e-6 samples, analyzed in a study published in National Science Review, reveal a distinct composition compared to near-side samples.
The soil is looser
and more porous, with a higher presence of light-colored particles like feldspar and glass (29.4% amorphous glass).
Mineralogically
it contains 32.6% plagioclase, 19.7% augite, 10% pigeonite, 3.6% orthopyroxene, and only 0.5% olivine.
Geochemically
the samples are rich in Al2O3 (14%) and CaO (12%) but low in FeO (17%), with trace elements like potassium (630 ppm), uranium (0.26 ppm), and thorium (0.92 ppm) significantly lower than near-side soils.
The samples include
diverse lithic fragments, such as mare basalt, breccia, agglutinate, glasses, and leucocrate, suggesting a mix of local basalts and non-basaltic ejecta, possibly from the lunar highland crust or South Pole-Aitken Basin impact melts.
These findings hint
at potential lunar mantle material, offering insights into the Moon’s early evolution, volcanic variability, and impact history.

The sampling process left a hole in the lunar surface shaped like the Chinese character "zhong" (中), the first character of China’s name, Zhōngguó.
