👉🏻What is Mpox?
Monkeypox(Mpox) is an endemic infection among wild animals like monkeys. Sometimes it appears in humans. It is similar to the dreaded smallpox, but less severe.
👉🏻How is it transmitted?
Contact with infected animals such as rodents, & primates. Human to human transmission has been documented. Bodily fluids, cough droplets, used articles such as bedding, towels can transmit.
👉🏻 When does it occur?
5-20 days after exposure.
👉🏻 Symptoms?
Fever, Typical Rashes( see photo), sore throat, swollen glands, Muscle Pain, Disfiguration can occur. Approx 5% of pts die.
👉🏻If it is an animal disease, why shd I be afraid?
It was earlier confined to Sub-Saharan & Central Africa to animals. Deforestation, Unplanned Urbanization, more frequent air travel has brought everybody into the circle of risk. Animals r entering human spaces more than ever before, & it has appeared now in populated areas.
👉🏻What is the treatment?
None, very specific to it till date. Hydration, maintenance of electrolyte balance, Painkillers, Antifever drugs & management of secondary infection constitutes current Rx protocol. The drugs, Tecovirimat, Brincidofovir, Cidofovir maybe considered in special severe cases, strictly by the dr. DON'T SELF-MEDICATE. DON'T.
👉🏻Is there a vaccine?
None, currently. However Smallpox vaccine has shown some cross protection against Mpox. It can be considered in severe outbreaks by public health drs.
👉🏻How do I protect myself?
As of now, frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with suspected animals including pets, PPE in Health workers might be considered.
