In a forthcoming paper w/ @ggolds, we discuss implications that #RedRiver ice breaking may have for maintaining vegetation in #NetleyLibauMarsh. Wetland plants provide wildlife habitat & sequester nutrients enroute to #LkWpg: these may be some tradeoffs of #mbflood protection.

A Day In The Life Of #WQMS: A retrospective #TBT, ahead of #WorldWetlandsDay: An #airboat adventure, #waterquality and #biological sampling on #NetleyLibauMarsh, the #coastalwetland where the #RedRiver meets #LakeWinnipeg. Setting out and all’s well.

@EOLakeWatch @SaveLakeWpg @CanadianWater @CyanoTracker Distinctive #cyanobacterial blooms on the two sides of #NetleyLibauMarsh, today. In the west marsh, a #grassclippingalgae bloom; likely #Aphanizomenon. Over east of the #RedRiver, a green paint / pea soup bloom, as pictured. #Microcystis dominating?

Concerning to see so much #purpleloosestrife along the west channel of the #RedRiver and in #NetleyLibauMarsh. There used to be a program in Manitoba to control this #invasivespecies. Is that no longer a thing?

Calm water and sunny skies to sample #NetleyLibauMarsh. The perfect natural wetland scene? Not so fast... Carpedo, dead ahead!

And we need to understand them better, too! #WQMS monitors #waterquality and #aquaticbiology in #NetleyLibauMarsh... All the better to understand how #coastalwetlands protect #LakeWinnipeg from #nutrient #eutrophication.

Coastal wetlands are protecting our communities and our way of life. We need to conserve them if we want them to keep protecting us. #ourwetlandsourfuture #conservation

More #WQMS representation at #LWRC2019! Gord Goldsborough @ggoldsb presents Elise Watchorn’s research on temporal change in wetland vegetation in #NetleyLibauMarsh and response to hydrologic dynamics on the #RedRiver and #LakeWinnipeg.
