I've been investing in net nets since 2006. By far, my favorite type of investment. Total # of companies purchased: 146 Avg holding period: 11.8 months Avg holding period return: 22.5% Annualized return: 22.9% #netnets

N3 - Number of #netnets - update We are still at a ~15 year high for the number of net nets, or stocks selling for <2/3 their net working capital (NWC). When the number is high, it could be a signal that these stocks may bounce back to value, a potential opportunity?

#netnet #stock update - a metric I like to look at in the market is the number of net net stocks. Historically we sit around 10-20. Now we have 2X more (excluding biotech) than at the peak of COVID (and that gap closed quickly). The gap is still widening, waiting for the close!

Below is the number of #netnets (N3) since 1999. We recently reached a ~15 year peak with 80 in the universe, close to both the GFC, but not quite as many as the dotcom crash. But the number appears to be dropping, as value returns to some of these stocks. (3/n) 👇

Update the "number of #netnets", a gauge showing the number of stocks selling <net working capital. The premise: the higher the number, more potential opportunities. But: High and increasing: market still selling off High but decreasing: value returning to net-nets (2/n) 👇

Traditionally #netnets are bought when they are trading for <0.66*NWC. This seems cheap, but they can go *much* lower. I find buying them as cheap as possible, especially after recent sell-offs, can help as well, and can attract those speculators and liquidity. (8/n) 👇

Apparently the "Father of #Value", Ben Graham, was also thinking about "the number of #netnets" back in the day: "Perhaps one could even determine whether the market level was getting too high or too low by counting the number of issues selling below working capital value" 😎

Unfortunately the number of #netnets is now steadily increasing again, suggesting more selling. We will want to see this level off to improve our chances of seeing a net-net friendly environment. When is that? Could snap back Monday. Or not. No one said it was easy. 😉
