TOO MUCH FUSS ABOUT CHIEF GANI FAWEHINMI SAN? Founded NIGERIAN WEEKLY LAW REPORTS so judgments won’t take 5 years. NWLR still runs today. Every lawyer lives on it. He also #INSTRUCTED that #hisChambers #beDISSOLVED after his death. #NoCommercialization.

CHIEF GANI FAWEHINMI SAN, SAM, GCON - THE LAW LEADING ICON Written by #ProudlyOK - A Direct Beneficiary 1. THE BEGINNING: PASS GRADE DIDN'T LIMIT HIM Born 22nd April 1938, Ondo. Lost his dad early. Mother was a trader. No money. No "perfect grades". No connections. Went to the UK 1961 and worked as welder, dishwasher, clerk to fund University of London. He proved that a PASS GRADE and POVERTY should not limit or restrict one's progress in life. University of London LLB 1964. Called to English Bar 1965. If Gani could rise from "pass grade" to SAN, then nobody’s story is finished. 2. FOUGHT TO BE LAW Nigerian Law School 1965 denied him: "Over-age. Not of good character" because he was an activist. He sued them. Won. Called to Nigerian Bar 1966. He broke the gate for all of us. 3. JAILED: 30+ TIMES. BETRAYED. Kirikiri. Kuje. Alagbon. Under 5 military regimes. Denied SAN for 20 years. NBA fought him. Govts he defended later detained him. But he said: "Prison is my second home. The cell is my office." 4. SENIOR ADVOCATE OF THE MASSES - SAM 1993: OAU Students gave him SAM because establishment refused him SAN. He is the ONLY PERSON EVER to hold SAM. Got SAN in 2001. Rejected OFR, MON, CON in life. Family received GCON posthumously in 2018. 5. EVERY LAWYER'S GUIDE: NWLR 1985 Founded NIGERIAN WEEKLY LAW REPORTS so judgments won’t take 5 years. NWLR still runs today. Every lawyer lives on it. He also INSTRUCTED that his Chambers be DISSOLVED after his death. No commercialization. 6. LANDMARK CASES Fawehinmi v. Akilu (1987) - Gave us Public Interest Litigation. Any citizen can sue govt. Garba v. Uni Maiduguri (1986) - Student rights. Right to Fair Hearing & Natural Justice Principle. AG Lagos v. AGF (2003) - Fought Tinubu govt on LGs. 7. HE SUED TINUBU & IGP ON CHICAGO CERTIFICATE 2000-2003: He dragged Gov. Tinubu & IGP to court over questionable Chicago State University certificate, perjury & non-disclosure. They called him enemy of Lagos. STARTED WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING NOW. Visionary. 20 years ahead. 8. THE POLITICS PAIN: 2003 NCP Upon all he did... 2003: Ran for President under NCP. Refused to bribe or rig. Result: Could not get up to 200,000 votes. The masses he fed and defended didn’t vote him. He said: "I did it for conscience, not votes." 9. THIS IS PERSONAL - #ProudlyOK I AM A DIRECT RECIPIENT OF CHIEF'S GENEROSITY. Through the Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Board, Chief gave me N100,000 as an undergraduate. That money didn’t just pay school fees. It planted a seed. First Class → NNPC/Total/Chevron Scholarships → Yale → The Hague I am standing here today because one man with "pass grade" background decided poor students deserved a chance. Chief did not know me. But he believed in "the masses". And I am part of the masses he lifted. 10. BOYS HE RAISED Mr. Tayo Oyetibo SAN Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN Trained in his chambers. He built people, not just cases. 11. PHILANTHROPY Scholarships: 300+ students like me. Library: 30,000 free law books in Surulere. Free legal aid for market women and journalists. 12. LAST INSTRUCTIONS & LEGACY Dissolve Chambers. Continue Scholarship. Keep Library. Keep NWLR. Died 5th Sept 2009. Lung cancer. 13. THE LESSONS FROM CHIEF TO ME AND YOU 1. PASS GRADE & POVERTY DON'T DEFINE YOU - Gani proved it 2. Fight for others even if they won’t vote for you 3. Build systems that outlive you. 4. Integrity is expensive but worth it. 14. FINAL SALUTE FROM #ProudlyOK CHIEF GANI FAWEHINMI SAN. SAM. GCON. SENIOR ADVOCATE OF THE MASSES WORLD LEADING LIGHT. LAW LEADING ICON. FROM PASS GRADE TO GLOBAL ICON. Because of you, I am here. Because of you, we can sue government. Because of you, lawyers have NWLR. HE IS EVERYTHING AWESOME ON. Rest in Power, Chief. We are still carrying your torch. #SeniorAdvocateOfTheMasses #LawLeadingIcon #ProudlyOK #GaniScholar #PassGradeToGreatness
