As people began to understand how effectively ISIS was using social media, I had already made it part of my mission to fight them there.
ISIS was not only taking territory in Iraq and Syria. It was taking territory online.
Twitter and other platforms became recruiting grounds, propaganda channels, fundraising networks, and virtual meeting places where extremists celebrated murders, threatened innocent people, and tried to lure new followers into their cause.
I decided that if ISIS was going to use social media as a weapon, then I would use the same battlefield against them.
I became a hunter of ISIS accounts.
Every day, I searched for their propaganda networks, documented the accounts, reported them, and pushed the platforms to shut them down. Some days it was five accounts. Other days ten. Sometimes twenty or more. One disappeared, and another would take its place. Then another. It was relentless.
But so was I.
Over time, hundreds of ISIS-linked accounts were removed. Each time one went dark, there was a simple message among those of us doing this work:
#TangoDown.
In military language, “tango” can mean a target. To me, #TangoDown meant one less ISIS account spreading hatred, glorifying murder, recruiting young people, or threatening Christians, Yazidis, Americans, “non-compliant” Muslims, and anyone else they considered an enemy.
Eventually, they noticed me.
ISIS supporters began threatening me directly. The threats were meant to intimidate me, frighten me, and make me stop. They did not. If anything, they confirmed that disrupting their networks was having an effect.
I knew shutting down a Twitter account would not defeat ISIS on the battlefield. But propaganda was part of their battlefield. Recruitment was part of their battlefield. Fear was part of their battlefield.
And every account we took away from them made that battlefield a little smaller.
It became deeply personal. I had seen what terrorism had done to Iraq. I had seen what happened to Christians and Yazidis. I knew people whose lives had been shattered by extremists. I had walked among communities that would later suffer unimaginably under ISIS. Watching these terrorists use American social-media platforms to boast about atrocities, threaten Americans and other innocent people, and search for new recruits was something I could not simply ignore.
So day after day, I hunted.
Five.
Ten.
Twenty.
#TangoDown.
It was my own small front in a much larger war, fought not with a rifle, but with persistence, documentation, and the determination to deny ISIS one more place to spread its poison.
