Last week we arrived five minutes late to my 11-year-old son’s Under Armour game. It was a #ParentFail to the max in my opinion. I was a little shook about showing up late if I am being honest. He didn’t let it phase him at all. He hustled straight to the bench, locked in to support his teammates. When the coaches called his name about a minute later, he stepped onto the court completely present. Hit a 3 pointer with a couple of gritty layups in about 2 minutes. But this wasn't about the outcomes...it was about his presence. In that moment something shifted in me. I wasn’t thinking about the score, the next play, or anything outside the gym. I was simply there, in the moment, fully present— watching my son be exactly who he is: smart, kind, driven, a great teammate, and fully alive in the moment. A wave of gratitude and pure joy washed over me. It felt spiritual, like the Good Lord handed me a brief, perfect window into something bigger than the game. As someone who coaches athletes and leaders on mental performance and presence, I spend my days teaching others how to access that state. My son taught the lesson to me in less than 2 minutes. He didn’t have to do anything special. He just showed up completely. And because he did, I could too. If you’re a parent, maybe this lands for you the way it did for me: the deepest moments with our kids aren’t planned. They arrive when we let ourselves meet them in the present.
