LISTEN/NOTIFY earns its keep quickly: async messaging between backend components, instant notifications on table changes, no separate message bus needed. What's less obvious is what happens under load. Every NOTIFY call acquires a cluster-wide exclusive lock to serialize notifications. In development, at traffic levels you can replicate on a laptop, you'll never see it. In production, at concurrency levels that are hard to test for ahead of time, it surfaces as statement timeouts and lock failures that don't obviously point back to NOTIFY as the cause. πβ οΈ
Jimmy walked through the full arc: a trigger firing NOTIFY on a high-traffic table, the investigation of symptoms that seem unrelated to the cause, and how to fix it in production. The bottom line from the lightning talk: keep NOTIFY out of your application hot path, or you risk accidental serialization.
