Se ne parla poco, ma la sua presenza è stata fondamentale in due band chiave tra fine anni ’80 e primi ’90. Con i Lush entra in punta di piedi, ma basta ascoltare attentamente per capire quanto il suo basso, preciso e rifinito, sostenga quel muro di chitarre shoegaze che sembra sul punto di franare e invece resta miracolosamente in equilibrio. Dopo lo scioglimento dei Lush, King si sposta nei Jesus and Mary Chain. Anche qui il suo stile resta misurato: non invade mai lo spazio, ma lo struttura, gli dà corpo. Non si tratta semplicemente di tenere il tempo; si tratta di definire la tensione emotiva dei pezzi senza appesantirli, con linee di basso che sembrano sparire e poi riaffiorare al momento giusto. Phil King è uno di quei musicisti che, senza mai cercare i riflettori, ha saputo dare spessore a due delle esperienze più emblematiche del rock alternativo britannico.

Il 28 aprile 1960 nasce Phil King. Se ne parla poco, ma la sua presenza è stata fondamentale in due band chiave tra fine anni ’80 e primi ’90.
