My recent work comes to fruition
According to our testing on @infection_php running #phpunit 12.5.0 with --exclude-source-from-xml-coverage while xml-report coverage generation can speedup the process 15-50% and reduce the filesize by 30-50% - depends on your project/test-suite

For a few weeks I am working on improvements for #phpunit #codecoverage features.
Just relased a blog post detailling the approach and all the ideas and results including deep links into all the relevant pull requests.

Looks like #phpunit xml code-coverage generation could get nearly twice as fast in the future.
this would for example considerably reduce overhead of the necessary "initial-test" step when running @infection_php on your project.
