Couldn't resist taking a photo of this bright and boo-tiful Phragmipedium in bloom today. So bright it's almost fluorescent. Have a safe & happy Halloween!

We’re now engaged in a thought provoking and challenging panel discussion about the ethical consideration in #invasivespecies eradication with a group of Indigenous leaders asking why has #Phrag become so abundant now? What is its purpose here as part of creation?

@trans_icon_mika @IJCsharedwaters @UWaterloo I mention this because I recently had and Indigenous group reveal that they wanted me to speak about my invasive #Phrag work but didn’t ask because they didn’t have funds. In Canada, most tenured faculty are expected to do 20% service (8 h/wk) as part of their salaried duties.
@lizahrw @HBraunCAN #sar stands for #SpeciesAtRisk. #phragmites was identified as a direct threat to 25% of Ontario’s species at risk in a report commissioned by the Min of Natural resources and Forestry. Since #Phrag suppression began in this project we’ve witnessed:
I had a delightful time chatting #wetlands, #phrag, #perceptions #Optimism and even a touch of @IISD_ELA with @stulivingstone and @climate_karen on their great #podcast @EmergingEnviro1. #PodcastRecommendations #PodcastAndChill check it out!
In Episode 25, we took a deep dive into wetland ecology and policy with Dr. Rebecca Rooney (@girls_can), including the exciting new Phragmites australis biocontrol project that Rebecca is working on. Check it out on your favourite podcatcher!

I really love @KarinKettenring and her group who are doing such awesome #Phrag science. We are excited to see if the #Marshorgans we (@megan_a_jordan & Jersey Fontz) set up this spring for a similar #priorityEffects exp yield similar results! Cool paper https://t.co/neroC6kKgU

Awesome day for #Phrag science scoping out sites for a new #experiment in the pouring rain and plagued by swarms of mosquitoes.

@lauren_eco @ClaireSchon They overwinter as eggs rather than larva, and actually this is one of the key aspects to their specificity for the invasive #Phrag. The native Phrag sheds its leaves, exposing eggs to winter. The invasive subspecies keeps its leaf sheaths, protecting the eggs.
Invasive #Phrag is a big deal - #Phragmites getting established in wetlands of Northern Ontario will be a monumental problem - prevention is possible - eradication after getting established - not so much! @GreenShovelCO #FONOM @NANComms https://t.co/P4YTPn7gUY
Exciting developments in #phragmites #biocontrol research! Our moth eggs are hatching and first babies are on the move! #phrag #moths #wetlands #invasivespecies
So if you see these white posts with cups on the end deep in the reeds - now you know what they’re for! They are little egg huts, holding moth eggs until the larvae can crawl out and get to work chewing up #phrag. Please do not disturb them 🙏

20 years of research has gotten us to this amazing point and the #WaterlooWetlandLab @WaterlooBio is thrilled to be looking at how effective the moths are at suppressing #Phrag and facilitating native plant recovery, right here on campus!
@girls_can You sure did! Great research showing why high-impact invaders like #Phrag is more successful vs. resident wetland plants. https://t.co/dugl6KLww8 @WaterlooSci @WaterlooBio @water_institute @BioInvasions @cdrobich @hks_dr

New from the #WaterlooWetlandLab a paper led by @cdrobich where we manipulated invasive #Phrag and the key species it was displacing in the field to study #competition dynamics. #invasion #Phragmites #wetlands
