Remember Elisa and her planar optode with the groovy blue light? Here is a preliminary result of her work. You are looking at the oxygen released from artificial roots in an anoxic medium. Soon experiments with real plant roots will follow.

Some bed time reading for you. Our accepted collaborative paper is now available online (see link below). "#Biochar engineering and ageing influence, the spatiotemporal dynamics of #soil in the #charosphere"

Postdoc Elisa is setting up a new technique in our lab. Apart from emitting groovy bluish light it also allows her to visualize oxygen as a 2D image thanks to a sensor called a planar optode. More pictures will follow as she perfects the setup.

Quantifying the #biocharsphere. Here's my 1st #planaroptode run, noise cancellation & light intensity tweaks required. But over 48 hours, soil pH is raised to match the #Biochar radiating out 4x the Biochar diameter. Could this explain observed increased native soil P release?
