An unconventional use of cookie cutters. #soil sampled within concentric circles from #biochar filled cages for #phosphorus and #pH determination. Samples taken on #harvest day for #chickpea seeds grown in glass #rhizoboxes.
Getting to the #root of targeted vs mixed #biochar in the #soil profile. Glimpse of #chickpea root proliferation in response to #foodwaste#biochar proximity. #winrhizo analysis to commence @ harvest. Correlations to be made with available #phosphorous @ intervals from biochar.

"We know more about the surface of the moon than we do about what happens in the soil." To help explore the hidden world of soils, GGE's @Dr_H_Glanville is introducing a brand new Environmental Science module this year: 'The Science of Soil'!๐ #soils https://t.co/I9EIrctRfU
When I'm not researching I'm currently converting my van to a campervan. Progress has definitely sped up during lockdown. Windows air vent and solar panels installed, wires run, insulation and panneling almost finished. Time to start on the kitchen. Definitely keeping me busy.
Quantifying the #biocharsphere. Here's my 1st #planaroptode run, noise cancellation & light intensity tweaks required. But over 48 hours, soil pH is raised to match the #Biochar radiating out 4x the Biochar diameter. Could this explain observed increased native soil P release?

@wildforest_matt To iron out confusion. Biochar, unlike charcoal is not intended as a fuel. It's intentions are to be bilogically positive. It can be made from any carbon based material e.g. food waste, imobilises toxins, fertilise crops & could offset ~9% of Europe's Co2 emissions via C storage.
@AdamWelz To iron out confusion. The only difference is #Biochar, unlike charcoal is not intended as a fuel. It can be made from any carbon based material e.g. food waste. It can imobilises toxins, fertilise crops & could offset ~9% of Europe's Co2 emissions.

@1planet1health Feel free to message our team there are many nuances to #biochar that are imperative to navigate. E.g. the difference between incineration, gasification & pyrolysis (see my previous tweets) & how those processes produce different forms of black carbon & varied emmission values.
@1planet1health Yes & no, the ~2000 yr old terra preta records evidences soil benefits of wood derived #biochar. But > feedstock heterogenenity (sewage sludge) = more challenging quality control. Re. readiness to market, further than you may think STRUBIAS outlined EU fertiliser regs for biochar
@ed_macfarlane@SarahTaber_bww We are indeed come by and say hello, my research focusses on food waste and sewage sludge derived #biochar, but there's a wide range of biochars being researched here. I will mention you at our research group Christmas meal tonight!
