STATEMENT OF OCTOVIANOS MOTE, ULMWP, WEST PAPUA
"The story of my people is one of facing an existential threat. Their denail of their rights has been going on since colonial times and was even witnessed by the UN IN 1968 when our territories were handed over to Indonesia. No meaningful consultation was carried out with the Indigenous Peoples of West Papua.
Every time we speak or take action to defend our right to self-determination or our right to land, we are seen as separatists; Indigenous Peoples that defend their rights are stigmatized, criminalized and murdered by the Indonesian state.
Indigenous Peoples have tried find international mechanisms to have investigations carried out into the violations of human rights in West Papua. But the Indonesian government has blocked this, and keeps blocking the investigation even when USA brings the issue up.
Today, 12,000 of West Papuan Indigenous Peoples are known to be internal refugees; they continue to be criminalized, and have not future at all, it is a story of survival in their own land.
As the land belongs to the government according to Indonesia's constitution, the suggested solution was to evict the population to a different land in the Pacific. In 1969 we were a majority. But now, we are only 30% of the population; we are also black, while Indonesians are Asians, so there are also racial issues, and we have to fight against discrimination.
We have no any future at all under Indonesia's colonization.

STATEMENT OF DANIEL KOBEI, OGIEK PEOPLES PROJECT, KENYA
Ogiek Indigenous People are hunters and gatherers but, as time has passed, they have become victims of evictions from their traditional lands that never seem to stop, all in the name of conservation and carbon credits. And though everyone knows it, everyone denies it.
On November 1st, 2023, 700 Ogiek people were evicted from their ancestral land and these people had nowhere to go, other than the forest, but the wildlife services are supporting these violations of rights.
The government has even tried to make Ogiek people fight amongst themselves. In 2021, Indigenous Peoples in Kenya won a case against the government, which included reparations and restitution of lands, but the verdict has not been respected, which means that the Ogiek People must go back to court to fight the evictions they suffer.
But if decisions are not respected, and the Ogiek are not given a chance, what is the point of going back to court?

It’s time to honor Indigenous Knowledges and advocate for inclusion! Join our event this Friday at 1:15pm in the Room 11 at UN, or on UN Web TV: https://t.co/r3lsLgETYF

National Ribbon Skirt Day is inspired by Isabella Kulak (Cote First Nation), who wore a ribbon skirt for a formal day at her school in December 2020. However, a staff member remarked that the dress wasn't proper enough. #RepresentationMatters #Proud2BIndigenous #Ribbonskirtday

“The connection to my Native culture helps me to remain strong,” says Stewart Erhart (Athabascan), from Tanana, Alaska, who led his high school to a 23-0 record while maintaining a B average in the classroom and mentoring younger kids.

It's back to school for many children. It's also time to stand with boys with braids. Braids are part of Native identity and culture. #IndigenousYouthRising #CulturalSurvival #Proud2BIndigenous #Stopbullying

Charlie not only got to be the first Native stand-up comedian to appear on national television but also happened to be a champion against racist stereotypes. Big up to Charlie on his posthumous 71st birthday!
