Useful insight into Labour thinking on 'public sector net worth' (#PSNW)... 👇 It might help more now though that i) the head of the OBR is known to be keen, and ii) Starmer has ruled out large-scale #nationalisation (so this can be pitched as more about hospitals, schools etc).

Useful change - Julian mentions Labour could be keen on the change. The party tried to use it in 2019, but it crashed & burned politically - looked too much like One Weird Trick to allow nationalisation. Big shifts like this need time to bed in. https://t.co/pZMJ9RvXAH

As expected, today's new data on UK 'public sector net worth' (#PSNW) shows that liabilities exceeded assets (by £606 billion) at the end of March. This is much smaller than the usual measure of public sector net debt (£2,507 billion), and not really a surprise. But...

Good thread. #PublicSectorNetWorth already appears in the Blue Book and @julianHjessop is right it should get more focus. A deteriorating #PSNW really does make future generations worse off (whereas the effect of a fiscal deficit is ambiguous).
