Hikoi leader and activist, Eru Kapa-Kingi is a Parliamentary staffer working for Te Pāti Māori and Vice- President Tāne of the party. Kapa-Kingi has also written the tikanga programme for Auckland law school. From January 1st, 2025, all core law courses will have a compulsory tikanga Māori component. This gives serious weight to the argument put forward by Gary Judd KC when he fronted the select committee in October to oppose compulsory tikanga, that law students were being "co-opted" into advancing a political agenda of decolonisation by having to do the course. Judd went on to say "This is calculated to intimidate dissent and create a false impression of the legitimacy of tikanga and its relevance to legal practice. Do not be deceived. Tikanga is not law." Auckland University now has a soon to be compulsory course written by a Māori activist and current vice president of a political party which has a mission and proven track record of stirring up discontent. There is a real and significant risk that this will create an activist judiciary.
