Una obra entretenida que sitúa una trama de amores y desamores en un entorno exótico y tropical, una plantación de caucho en Indochina. En «Tierra de pasión» un matrimonio llega a una plantación de caucho en Indochina, regentada por un hombre duro, al mismo tiempo que una aventurera. Al poco tiempo surge un triangulo amoroso bastante peligroso. De todas las películas que rodó Clark Gable antes de consagrarse como el rey de #Hollywood, este tal vez sea una de las más destacables. Aunque hoy en día la película está algo olvidada y superada por mejores producciones, «Tierra de pasión» tuvo mucho éxito en el momento de su estreno. Jean Harlow realiza una de sus mejores actuaciones en su (lamentablemente) corta vida. Cada una de sus frases, gestos e ironías, aparentemente despreocupadas, terminan por hacer reír a los espectadores. Clark Gable está genial. Se nota que estaba trabajado mucho para ser un gran actor y estar a la altura de las grandes estrellas del momento. La película se hizo justo antes de que entrara en vigor el #CódigoHays. El Código de Producción Cinematográfica censuró muchas escenas del filme que no consideraban éticas. Dos escenas se salvaron de la quema, la famosa imagen de Jeqn Harlow dándose un baño en un barril y cuando Clark Gable abraza a #MaryAstor justo debajo del pecho. El Código Hays fue un conjunto de reglas o lineamientos para la autocensura dentro de la industria cinematográfica, para regular el contenido moral de las películas. Fue creado por la Asociación de Productores Cinematográficos de Estados Unidos (MPAA, por su sigla en inglés) y adoptado por los grandes estudios de Hollywood entre 1930 y 1968. Sin embargo, su aplicación rigurosa no comenzó realmente hasta 1934. El código recibe su apelativo por #WilliamHarrisonHays, presidente de la MPAA entre 1922 y 1945, y por lo tanto considerado el responsable directo e indirecto de su creación y aplicación. Durante los años veinte la imagen pública de Hollywood no era la mejor. Dado el contenido —hasta entonces no regulado— de las películas, los sectores más conservadores de la población estadounidense las consideraban un hervidero de depravación. No ayudaba que la industria había sido afectada por una serie de escándalos mediáticos, que llegaron a su punto de quiebre con la violación y asesinato de la actriz #VirginiaRappe durante una fiesta en 1921. Ambos crímenes fueron atribuidos injustamente al actor #RoscoeFattyArbuckle, quien estuvo con ella en la fiesta. El acontecimiento fue seguido de una ola de sensacionalismo mediático, condenas de la sociedad civil y presión política. Ante esta pesadilla de relaciones públicas y la amenaza de la regulación federal, los estudios optaron por la autorregulación: dada una resolución judicial en 1915, el cine no tenía las protecciones a la libertad de expresión de la primera enmienda constitucional. Los estudios entonces formaron la MPAA y trajeron a Hays para presidirla y delinear una estrategia para la regulación del contenido cuestionable en sus películas. Los esfuerzos iniciales no fueron exitosos, pero crearon el molde de lo que se convertiría en el Código Hays. En 1927, Hays y varios ejecutivos de los estudios (#IrvingGThalberg de #MetroGoldwynMayer, #SolWurtzel de la entonces #FoxFilmCorporation, y #EHAllen de #ParamountPictures) crearon una lista de lineamientos laxos (los famosos Do’s and Don’ts) sobre cuestiones como temas a evitar y cómo representarlos (o no).
