But the DEC claimed it had received complaints wildlife was kept illegally and potentially unsafely at Peanuts’ owners’ home in upstate New York. DEC officials said the squirrel and the raccoon were killed in order to be tested for rabies after Peanut allegedly bit a worker involved in the investigation. But in the latest twist in the saga Chemung County Executive Chris Moss revealed Tuesday (November 12) that the tests on both creatures came back negative. According to the NYP, a newly revealed timeline of proceedings shows officials advised on the euthanising of the pets an entire week before they were taken from their unofficial caretaker Mark Longo on October 30. “Wildlife cannot be confined like domestic animals, and if there was an exposure, the animals would need to be tested for rabies,” DEC wrote to Chemung County on October 23. This all but sealed Peanut’s fate - a rabies test includes removing a creature’s head so the subject can have their brains examined. According to the county’s timeline, on October 29 the DEC was coordinating the animals’ euthanisations with Elmira Animal Control, something that contradicts their original explanation for Peanuts’ de@th - ie. that he had prompted his own execution with his bad behaviour.
