🇺🇳 On this day, 78 years ago, the United Nations voted on #Resolution181 — a decision that reshaped the modern Middle East and altered the course of history.
Adopted on 29 November 1947, the partition plan sought to create two states, Jewish and Arab, in the waning days of the British Mandate. For the Jewish community in #Palestine it represented an imperfect but vital path to sovereignty; for the Arab leadership, it became a symbol of refusal and grievance. The acceptance by one side and the rejection by the other set in motion a chain of events that led to the 1948 war, the creation of the State of Israel, and the beginning of a conflict that continues to reverberate today.
The resolution itself laid out a detailed plan for ending the British Mandate and dividing the territory. It proposed the creation of two independent states — one Jewish and one Arab — while placing Jerusalem under an international regime administered by the #UN. The plan also envisioned a joint economic union to maintain trade, infrastructure, and currency links between the two states, and it included a transition process under UN supervision to ensure orderly withdrawal of British authorities and protection of minority rights.
#Jerusalem and #Bethlehem were to be demilitarized and governed by a UN-appointed administrator, reflecting the cities’ unique religious significance. In essence, Resolution 181 was a blueprint for coexistence, combining political separation with economic and administrative interconnection.
Since the adoption of Resolution 181, numerous opportunities to realize its vision have been missed. The immediate rejection by Arab states and the ensuing war set the stage for decades of conflict, displacement, and mutual distrust. Efforts at negotiation, from Camp David to Oslo, have repeatedly faltered, leaving the two-state ideal largely unrealized. Political divisions, regional instability, and competing national narratives have prevented the economic and administrative cooperation envisioned by the resolution, turning a blueprint for coexistence into a long-standing symbol of what might have been.
Seventy-eight years later, Resolution 181 stands not just as a diplomatic milestone but as a reminder of the enduring weight of choices: the choices of nations, of leaders, and of peoples confronted with history as it unfolds.

(This ensued despite - or because of - a campaign of #terror against #British forces in #Jerusalem by militant #Zionist groups like #Haganah, #Irgun and #SternGang who hanged #British officers and carried out the largest mass casualty terror attack against the British nationals in history (to date, surpassing #IRA, #AlQaeda or #IslamicState).
33 nations voted in favour, 13 against and 10 abstained. Despite significant opposition, #Israel was admitted as a full member to the UN in 1949.
Since then, no country has consistently been more condemned by countless UN resolutions than Israel.
And no country has used its Security Council veto to protect Israel being held to account for crimes against humanity than #USA.
This week, after being added to the UN's notorious "list of shame" for targeting #Palestinian children in #Gaza and #WestBank Israel is condemned by the UN today for "war crimes...including extermination, murder, starvation, forcible transfer and sexual and gender-based violence."
