Now, some of the largest players are moving further up the value chain: they are launching their own stablecoins.
@MetaMask has recently introduced $mUSD (MetaMask USD), a wallet-native, dollar-backed stablecoin.
@phantom has announced the upcoming launch of $CASH, designed to bring everyday payments into its ecosystem.
And in the @MultiversX universe, @xPortalApp and its sister company @xMoney_com are preparing to issue regulated stablecoins of their own.
These moves raise a key question: are stablecoins a natural extension of the wallet model, or the start of a direct battle for monetary dominance in Web3?
Why it is competitive?
- Native stablecoins let users move seamlessly between on-chain activity and real-world payments.
- Stablecoin reserves (often U.S. Treasuries or equivalent) generate yield, which can fund ecosystem growth.
- A wallet-issued stablecoin makes the app more central to a user’s financial activity.
- Clearer frameworks, like MiCA in Europe, make issuing compliant stablecoins more feasible.
- Stablecoins are increasingly the bridge between traditional money and tokenized assets.
Why It Is Competitive?
- Each wallet is effectively trying to make its stablecoin the "default money" in its ecosystem.

🦊 MetaMask - $mUSD
Launched in 2025, mUSD is integrated into the MetaMask wallet and debit card system. Backed by dollar assets, it allows users to buy, swap, and spend directly inside MetaMask. Initial adoption has been strong, with issuance jumping from $15M to $65M within a week.
👻 Phantom - $CASH
Phantom, which raised $150M earlier this year, positions $CASH as the key to transforming its wallet into an all-purpose financial tool. By bridging DeFi and everyday payments, Phantom wants $CASH to become the preferred medium of exchange in the Solana ecosystem.
🇷🇴 xPortal & xMoney - $EUROX, $USDX, $RONX
xPortal is built as a financial super-app in the #MultiversX ecosystem, combining wallet, card issuance, dApp integrations, and payments.
xMoney, now strengthened by a $21.5M funding round led by @SuiNetwork & MvX, is poised to launch MiCA-compliant stablecoins: EUROX, USDX, and RONX. The funding strengthens xMoney’s capability to scale infrastructure, launch its native token $XMN, and accelerate merchant and wallet integrations.
Beyond these three, the movement is global.
European banks are experimenting with euro-stablecoins, Japanese institutions like Minna Bank are testing stablecoin payments, and Mastercard is building rails to connect wallet stablecoins directly to merchants. Infrastructure providers such as Bridge (@stripe-backed) and @raincards are enabling issuers to launch stablecoins faster.
The decision by wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, and xPortal/xMoney to issue stablecoins is both coherent and competitive. It is coherent because wallets are the natural point of interaction between users and digital money. It is competitive because each issuer seeks to establish its own standard, with all the network effects that entails.
The race is no longer just about who has the best wallet interface. It is about who can turn their stablecoin into the foundation of the next generation of digital money.
