So there are basically 3 ways an AI agent can pay with a card today. Where do each of these break?
(1) You hand the agent your 16 digit PAN. It works everywhere, but the merchant and your bank can’t tell a bot is buying, your full credential is sitting in someone’s system, and disputes get messy fast (“did you buy this, or did your agent?”)
(2) A network agent token. Visa Intelligent Commerce or Mastercard Agent Pay swap your card number for a token tied to that specific agent, with spending limits and a clear “an agent did this” signal. It’s the cleanest model, but it only works where issuers, acquirers and merchants have switched it on. A ton to be figured out here still
(3) A card the agent platform issues. Either stored value (you prefund a balance with the agent) or card fronting (the platform’s card pays the merchant, then it charges your real card behind the scenes). This works today and seems to be gaining steam as a preferred mode, it lets agents monetize payments as well
Working with @whop has been nothing short of excellence.
I see firsthand how fast this team executes, and how deeply they care about their customers. Day in. Day out. We’re becoming a better platform at @raincards thanks to them. Massively deserved, congrats 🍾
Rain is powering one of the first projects out of BitGo Labs.
@gokubupay pairs a stablecoin-backed card with an AI assistant that analyzes spending, surfaces insights, and helps users make better financial decisions.
Today, BitGo launched BitGo Labs, a research and innovation unit to explore and build the next breakout application for digital assets.
If BitGo is the operating system crypto runs on, Labs is where we build the apps. We’re focused on use cases that only crypto can deliver, and we’re using AI and BitGo APIs to build them in months, not years.
Among BitGo Labs’ first projects is @gokubupay, a consumer application that uses an AI-powered card designed to optimize your spending, accepted wherever Visa is accepted. Gokubu is already live and users can sign up today at https://t.co/WlK33f74ys.

How Rain is thinking about agentic commerce.
There's a lot that needs to be sorted out around consumer-directed agentic behavior.
For example, what happens when you ask an agent to book a nonrefundable dinner reservation and it books ten?
In traditional consumer payments, there are well-defined rules around refunds, merchant disputes, and chargebacks. We haven't yet established equivalent standards for agentic payments.
Can we take lessons from existing consumer protections to design systems that protect people when agents transact on their behalf?
Yes. And the need is immediate. Teams are already going live with agentic solutions on Rain, with more launching every month.
We can't wait for regulators to create these protections. The industry needs to come together to establish standards that regulators can then codify.
That's why we convened the Agentic Payments Alliance, working with Visa, Mastercard, and others to help define the rules of the road.
Whether you're looking to build or help shape industry standards, reach out. We'd love to work with you.
