#Steinernema feltiae entomopathogenic nematodes #EPNs can infest western corn #rootworms #WCR. A lab trial exposed larval & pupae WCR to EPNs in soil for 10 days. Happy to see some WCR bursting forth w/ EPNs. "Yes, Virginia, EPNs can kill rootworms...and we have seen the bodies!"

Do you know any undergraduate students looking for summer work at #UIllinois? My field crops insects program is still looking one more awesome summer assistant. Help us whack #corn #rootworms! See the details in the advertisement. https://t.co/weZBrIdhAt

“The Good Old Days” #Corn #rootworms #CRW are perennial pests, but only for the last 150 yr. In post-Civil War America, vast areas of corn cultivation allowed CRW to use corn as its new host. The 1st #NCR pest record is from 1874 in MO. Before corn was king, CRW were scarce.

I had terrific fun working on #BOTB w/ the director & the representatives of #Corteva Agriscience, who sponsored the film. #Rootworms are the stars! My students get a little screen time as do some campus locations. Here's a link to the film. https://t.co/vKWhi6bWH0
Expect similar sightings in IL where northern #corn #rootworms are present. They are pollen specialists & can be common outside of corn. The capacity of their eggs to diapause in the soil for 1, 2 or more winters makes predicting their presence in cornfields
challenging! #NCR
Northern corn rootworm beetles are mobile. If pollen and fresh silks are not available, they'll leave corn fields to look for pollen. I found several on coneflower blooms this morning - quite a distance from corn.

This is an unfavorable USDA outlook for dry conditions in #Illinois.
Finding 0.25"-0.5" white larvae after digging up roots in areas of water stressed #corn (i.e. persistent curled leaves) may indicate #rootworms are contributing to stress by eating root tissue. #WCR

“So, what kind of corn rootworm pressure will we have in '23?”
“How many beetles/week did you count on your sticky traps last summer?”
“What you mean ‘You didn’t put out any traps?’...”
**Avoid “unpleasant surprises” - monitor #rootworms w/ sticky traps this summer!

“Really?!” Did you know that #Diabrotica larvae (e.g. western, northern, southern #corn #rootworms) don’t have eyes (called stemmata when present in the larvae of insects w/ complete lifecycles)? The condition is not so unusual when larvae are subterranean.

2021 IL Statewide Insect Survey - corn & soybean fields randomly selected across the state (5 per county, 5-6 counties per crop reporting district). 100 Sweeps on the exterior and interior of soybean fields, 20 plants per corn field. Let's talk #rootworms first
Rootworm Crack. Did you know that #rootworms are incredibly responsive to the bitter compounds produced by plants in the squash family? Today we planted a field full of squash as part of a new study to explore those responses from the plant and insect perspective.

It’s a good thing southern #corn #rootworms #SCR adults don’t survive the winter in Illinois! I have seen more SCR (#Diabrotica undecimpunctata) in ‘20 than any recent year. SCR annually infest Illinois from the south, they show up around June 1st. They seem to be everywhere!

Corn #rootworms inflict >$1 billion annually in lost revenue/control costs. Read why #INHS insect behaviorist @talkingrootworm says, "Illinois' period of good fortune may be coming to an end." ➡️ https://t.co/LUfbxSLVMN

In northern Illinois, you cannot collect western #corn #rootworms without also collecting northern corn rootworms. Both species threaten corn yield potential and are targeted by #Bt corn hybrids. Analyses of these populations will tell us about the status of local Bt resistance.

Recent warm temperatures are giving degree days a boost. While much of the cornbelt has precip chances for much of this week, 5-10 day forecasts are calling for it to be warmer and drier. Just what #rootworms need during hatch.

Nearly 100 experts from more than 20 countries convened to present the very latest research on how to fight a range of devastating maize insect pests – including corn borers, #rootworms, #bollworms and #fallarmyworms – that threaten #globalfoodsecurity. https://t.co/tOvCs53GsB
