The Mariam Dearit shrine, located just outside the town of Keren, is one of the most revered Christian pilgrimage sites in Eritrea. It's associated with the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, although people of many faiths including Catholics and even Muslims respect the site due to its sacred nature and the miracles attributed to it. At the heart of the shrine is a massive, ancient sycamore fig tree, which locals say is over a thousand years old. The belief that Saint Mary was hidden or appeared within the tree’s trunk adds to the mystical aura of the place. For generations, people have said that the tree never withers and offers protection and healing to those who visit in faith. it’s believed that Saint Mary was persecuted in Keren, and in order to protect her from harm, she was miraculously hidden inside the trunk of a tree. That tree, now the centerpiece of the Mariam Dearit shrine, has become a sacred symbol not just of protection, but of resilience, divine refuge, and hope during hardship. Every year in May, thousands of pilgrims both Eritreans and visitors from abroad walk or drive to Mariam Dearit for the Feast of Saint Mary.
