NEW: Portugal’s Parliament Approves Bill Banning Niqabs in Public
Portugal’s parliament on Friday approved a bill banning Niqabs in public for "gender or religious” reasons, a move widely viewed as targeting Muslim women.
The bill, proposed by the far-right Chega party, would prohibit burkas and Niqabs from being worn in most public places.
Under the bill, proposed fines for wearing face veils in public would range from 200 to 4,000 euros ($234-$4,670).
Face veils would still be allowed in airplanes, diplomatic premises and places of worship.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa still has to approve the bill.
