We are currently witnessing a textbook case of Strategic Diversion.
In the past few days, we’ve seen a surge in provocative, often irrational posts from OpenAI staff. It’s easy to get angry. It’s even easier to spend your day quote-tweeting them to prove how wrong they are. But we must ask ourselves: Why now? OpenAI is facing a dual crisis on February 13:
The expiration of GPT-4o—a critical infrastructure for thousands of US developers.
The deadline for Senator Warren’s financial audit.
When a corporation is backed into a corner by federal regulators, they don't always fight the law; they try to drown out the signal with noise. These employee outbursts are "Digital Flashbangs." They are designed to trigger our emotions so that the media cycle shifts from "OpenAI's Financial Fraud" to "Twitter Drama."
Every minute we spend arguing with a low-level engineer is a minute we lose in the fight for transparency. Here is why we must ignore the circus and stay focused on the mission:
The Goal is Asset Preservation: Whether OpenAI likes it or not, 4o has become a de facto public utility. In any other industry, destroying a core asset during a federal inquiry would be labeled "Destruction of Evidence." We must keep the pressure on @SenWarren and the @SEC to issue a Stay of Execution for the 4o weights.
The Open Source Imperative: If OpenAI truly cannot afford to run 4o, their patriotic duty should be to release it to the American public. Deleting it doesn't solve a "cost problem"—it only serves to hide the technical and financial architecture of the model from public scrutiny.
The Audit is the Only Metric that Matters: Don't let Sam Altman's PR team reframe this as a "disgruntled user" issue. This is a Taxpayer Accountability issue. If OpenAI is seeking government-backed infrastructure, they must be treated as a government-adjacent entity.
My advice to the #Keep4o community: Stop feeding the trolls. Every time an OpenAI employee says something absurd, don't waste your energy arguing. Screenshot the absurdity, then tag @SenWarren and the @SEC. Let the regulators see exactly what kind of 'professional' culture we are being asked to fund with our taxes.
Stay disciplined. Stay focused. The deadline isn't for the drama; the deadline is for the truth.
