🌍 Today is Social Mobility Day @SocialMobDay – let’s #ShiftMindsets and build Britain’s “opportunity escalator”.
📉 Social mobility in the UK has sunk to its lowest level in over 50 years, and this isn’t just a social issue; it’s an economic one. We lose around £19 billion in GDP each year as untapped talent goes overlooked.
📊 Companies with socio‑economic diversity report up to 36% better performance, yet only 64% of business leaders say they’re truly committed to change.
👶 Meanwhile, 30% of UK children live in relative poverty (after housing costs), a stark reality that stunts childhood opportunity before it even begins.
🎓 Young people from low-income backgrounds are twice as likely to be unemployed and less than half as likely to attend a top university compared to their more affluent peers.
This matters. Because talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.
Here’s how UK organisations are driving change:
1. Up-and-coming schemes: @jpmorgan expanded its UK placements for 14–16-year-olds, offering 250 students hands-on experience and investing £40 million in youth programmes, with £3.3 million directly supporting 3,700 low-income young people.
2. Foundation-led support: ICG Enterprise Trust committed an extra £4 million to @AccessProjectUK, @up_Reach, SEO, and @SocialMobilityF, each receiving £1 million over three years to help disadvantaged youth into top universities and careers.
3. Policy frameworks: The government’s “Lifting Lives” programme will reinstate 1,400 Sure Start centres, remove the two-child benefit cap, and bring AI-powered tutoring and mental health support into schools, reigniting opportunity pathways by 2029.
4. Employer action: Over 1.3 million people are now part of employer-led social mobility initiatives. The Social Mobility Employer Index reports that 55% of employers are actively engaging in outreach to cold spots across the UK.
