Callum Anderson MP

@UKLabour Member of Parliament for Buckingham, Bletchley, Tattenhoe, Winslow and the many villages in between. 🇬🇧

[Callum Anderson MP @_CallumAnderson]

Last week, I delivered my maiden speech.

Besides expounding the joys of Buckingham & Bletchley, I recognised those who'd helped me - but most importantly told our young people that regardless of your background, Britain is still a country where you can make it if you work hard.

Finally, we’re also taking steps on EVs and gas standing charges.

We are taking immediate action following the independent review into the cost of public EV charging by announcing we’ll establish a taskforce to explore allowing drivers to use their domestic electricity tariff at local, lower-powered public chargers.

This is a complex proposal so in the nearer-term we will provide £100 million over the next 2 years to reduce the cost of using those same chargers. This funding is expected to put around £150 a year back in the pocket of a typical EV driver without home charging and who charges on-street. It is right to give households more control over their energy bills by abolishing gas standing charges, so that consumers no longer face a daily gas charge before they have used any energy. Ofgem will implement this reform as soon as possible, giving households greater scope to reduce their gas bills by using less.

We have also launched the Warm Homes Loan Scheme giving homeowners across the UK, access to zero- and low interest loans to install clean energy technology including solar panels, batteries and heat pumps, which could cut energy bills by up to £550 a year.

This is the longer-term reform needed to reset our approach to the energy system.

In the meantime, the government is also providing immediate breathing space to households by extending the temporary 0% rate of VAT on electricity for another three months, as well as providing £100 Household Energy Payments directly to up to 20 million households in Council Tax bands A-D in England, with funding for Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to provide similar support.

This is on top of the existing Warm Homes Discount, which provides £150 off energy bills for around 6 million households each winter until 2031, as well as the £150 average off all household energy bills, announced in April 2026.

[Dan Tomlinson MP @dantomlinsonmp]

This Budget is the start of a new energy pathway that the 10 Year Plan will build on. The priority is to bring energy costs down to help British business to compete, and British households to cope. And cheaper electricity will boost electrification, increasing our energy security and helping to decarbonise the whole economy.

What does this mean? First, it means a focus on levies and policy costs on bills. The Conservatives added £100 to everyone's bill via levies in their last decade in power. Labour has cut £150 from bill costs already. But today, John Healey has drawn a line in the sand, with the announcement that we will add no new costs to energy bills, with a comprehensive cost control framework to follow at the spending review. The Chancellor is also junking plans, first set out by the Tories, to add on up to around £10 a year on bills to pay for hydrogen projects.

Second, it means taking account of the interaction between the pace of grid build-out and the pace at which renewables are added to the grid. The NAO have said that investment in expanding the transmission network declined in real terms between 2016 and 2020, just when it was clear that more intermittent power meant we would need more capacity. It is now forecast to rise to over £10bn a year. But with growing constraint and distribution costs, it's right that the system costs of all new power are considered. That is why we will only procure clean power through AR8 (the next auction round) if we are confident it will lower bills. And we will reform the contract for difference by AR9 to support building the lowest cost system, fixing market distortions and siting assets in the right place.
The evidence is clear, clean power is an essential part of the route to cheap power, and the overall approach of seeking to get ourselves off the gas-price rollercoaster to the right one. Gas is setting the electricity price less and less every year. If it wasn't for adding renewables to the grid in recent years then the current Iran price shock would have been worse for families and businesses. The Conservatives and Reform's ideological anti-renewables approach is the wrong one and fails in the face of evidence on how to protect bill payers from shocks and the need to make ourselves less reliant on foreign dictators. We'll take a pragmatic approach to get bills down.

Getting electricity prices down, ensuring new clean power does not run ahead of the grid, is also the credible route to reaching our net zero goals. The decarbonisation that we want to enable in our homes, on our roads and in our businesses, is six times larger than that still to be achieved from getting to a clean grid. Unless we make electricity cheaper relative to other energy sources, we will struggle to increase adoption of EV and heat pumps.

On the one hand you could sayhe’s brave, but if you know @dantomlinsonmp, you’ll know he had fun in those 7-8 minutes!

Great to see a @hmtreasury minister really gripping the specific and strategic detail.

Good news on the new budget from @JohnHealey_MP with a strong commitment on defence. The UK role in transatlantic security is vital, and I welcome this move to put 🇬🇧 on a credible path towards meeting the commitment made by all NATO Allies in The Hague - to ensure we’re all investing what’s needed to remain ready & able to deter aggression and defend our freedom and security

[Matt Clifford @matthewclifford]

This seems a very encouraging budget for entrepreneurs, between the new Founders Relief and further reforms to EMI (plus no changes to CGT). Very good news!

In his first 100 days as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham has been tackling the long term problems that have been ignored for far too long and giving people vital breathing space on the cost of living.

[Andy Burnham @andyburnham]

Congratulations to President @LulaOficial on your re-election - a true victory for democracy and progressive values.

I look forward continuing to work together as we create opportunities for people in the UK and Brazil.

[Andy Burnham @andyburnham]

100 days ago, I promised to do things differently.

From cutting everyday costs to handing power back to communities, change is already underway.

But I know there’s much more to do - this is just the beginning.
