What an afternoon it has been!
Explored Nuapatna today, the place where the famed #Khandua pata offered to Lord Jagannath is woven. Nuapatna produces stunning gorgeous single Ikat weaves known as #khandua sarees, where only the weft is tie n dyed and the design emerges only as the fabric is woven one line at a time!
Ikat is a textile art form where the yarn is tied in the desired pattern and dyed before it is woven. Undyed yarn is stretched on a square or rectangular wooden frame and tied with thread of a darker colour as per the desired motif.
The tied yarn is then dyed. The yarn takes the colour only on the exposed part. The threads are then untied to let the design emerge. This process is repeated many times if more colours are to be used till the desired motif is achieved. The dyeing is done in light colours first, followed by darker colours.
The Patra family has been in the business of weaving for centuries. They showed me Kenduli Khandua, the especially woven Khandua cloth for Lord Jagannath with the verses of Geet Govind done in Ikat.
I met Sarat Patra, Kabir Sanman awardee. His wife Yashodhara, as well as his brothers Sahadev Patra and their older brother, Surendra are all National Award winning weavers and have produced some real masterpieces.
Nuapatna and the nearby village of Maniabandha are weaving clusters that weave exquisite single ikats. Mr. Patra estimates there are still more than a thousand active looms in the village, though the number is steadily dwindling. Most looms in Nuapatna are pit looms, with the whole family joining in the weaving activity.
There is the musical clickety clack of the loom coming from every home in the lane leading to Mr. Patraโs home that is so soothing to hear!
