One such tool is the Corpus Query Language (CQL), a powerful means to search and analyze text in #SketchEngine. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of #CQL, peppered with examples to illuminate your path.
1. Basics of CQL
At its core, CQL is about pattern matching. Think of it as a sophisticated 'Find' function that can search not just for words, but for patterns, grammatical structures, and more.
- Word Search: Simply type the word.
- Example: `dog`
2. Using Wildcards
Wildcards are symbols that represent unknown characters.
- `?`: Matches any single character.
- Example: `d?g` matches 'dog', 'dig', but not 'drag'.
- `*`: Matches zero or more characters.
- Example: `d*g` matches 'dg', 'dog', 'drag', 'doog', etc.
3. Specifying Part-of-Speech Tags
To search for words based on their grammatical role:
- `[tag="POS"]`: Replace `POS` with the desired part-of-speech tag.
- Example: `[tag="NN"]` finds all nouns.
4. Lemma Searches
Lemmas are base forms of words. To search for all forms of a word:
- `[lemma="run"]`: This would match 'run', 'runs', 'ran', 'running', etc.
5. Combining Criteria*
Use square brackets `[]` to combine multiple criteria.
- Example: `[lemma="be" & tag="V.*"]` finds all verb forms of "be".
6. Specifying Word Order**
CQL respects the order of your criteria.
- Example: `[tag="JJ"] [tag="NN"]` finds an adjective followed by a noun, like 'red apple'.
7. Using the 'Within' Operator
To search within a specific context, use the `within` operator.
- `<s/>`: Represents a sentence boundary.
- Example: `[lemma=".*ing$"] [tag="JJ"] [tag="NN"] within <s/>` finds a gerund, followed by an adjective and a noun, all within a single sentence.
8. Negation
To exclude specific criteria:
- `![tag="NN"]`: Finds tokens that are NOT nouns.
9. Proximity Searches**
To find words near each other:
- `[]{}3,5`: Matches any token, repeated 3 to 5 times.
- Example: `dog []{}3,5 cat` finds instances where 'dog' and 'cat' are separated by 3 to 5 words.
10. Advanced Techniques
- Attributes: Use `::` to specify attributes.
- Example: `[word="dog" :: number="plural"]` finds plural forms of 'dog'.
- Alternatives: Use `|` to specify alternatives.
- Example: `[tag="JJ" | tag="RB"]` finds adjectives or adverbs.
