I only read 100 pages into the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, because after that I complained to my friend who'd suggested it, and he said, "It gets better in another 200 pages or so." It's fine if the early game has restricted choice, so long as the choice is real. When Age of Empires opens up, you have a town center & 3 villagers. Do you gather sheep? Look for berries? Build a house? You have choices. At the start of my game Cthulhu Wars you have 6 cultists and 8 Power. Almost everyone moves a cultist & builds a gate as their first two moves, but where do you build that gate? What's your third move? I repeat: interesting decisions that matter is what makes a game fun.
