UPDATE: I did speak to the incoming director on the phone. At first she was defensive to my concerns. She explained she's just a mom and has been volunteering. She assumes a paid position November 1st. She admitted they know things are bad. She shared stories of parents who have died & others who have had life-changing illnesses. But in a short interview & being nervous it's hard to get more out to the public. She shared some of her own struggles her high functioning son has encountered. After a somewhat contentious beginning to our call we talked about Spelling. She went to a presentation I was also at with two spellers this past February. She was open to having my son's group do their presentation they've been working on once they add more staff & get that sort of thing going. I must admit I was impressed she was aware of spelling. I told her I'm passionate about it & want to see the word getting out about it. Earlier opportunities could lead to better outcomes & potentially alleviate problems with a way to truly communicate. I was pleased with the outcome of our conversation. I let her know whitewashing of autism is not ok. But, I did thank her for the work she does. We are all coping with difficult situations. Earlier in the conversation she did indicate they are bound to certain positions as dictated by the Autism society of America. This is after I asked if they have a medical person looking at research. For example the Tylenol link. How did they decide that wasn't a valid concern? Reading through the lines ASA is preventing the whole truth about autism from being shared. 😡
