We tend to rush through the year. But some dates make us stop and remember. October 7 is one of them. Three years ago today, the terrorist organization Hamas carried out one of the most horrific attacks in modern history. Children, women and elderly people were brutally murdered and abducted. Our thoughts remain with the victims, their families and all those who have lost loved ones since. I spend much of my time in the region. In Israel and across the Middle East, I meet people who, despite everything, want the same things: to live in security, to build something and to give their children a better future. The past three years have been marked by war, grief and deep divisions, far beyond the region. Too often, the debate has turned into hatred. In Europe, too, criticism of Israel has often become an obsession, and antisemitism has risen to levels many thought belonged to the past. But some are leading by example. For several years now, the Abraham Accords have made possible what once seemed unthinkable. Israel, the UAE and other partners in the region are trading, investing and working together. And these ties have endured even through the hardest moments. That gives me hope. The Middle East is full of people, Israelis and Arabs, Jews, Muslims and Christians, who want to live together in peace. Our responsibility is to strengthen them, and to stand firmly against those who seek to destroy that future through terror.
