#Sumption says #Palestine has a "settled population" - a criterion for recognition - but ignores the 700,000 Jewish settlers, unsettling (frankly not my type) but undoubtedly settled there. Is "ethnic cleansing" OK for them? If so, why not for others? Is that the price of peace?

Lord #Sumption has just been assuring viewers of @Channel4News that #Palestine has a single government [!] and a "settled population" - leaving aside that two different Palestinian territories - Gaza and the West Bank - have been [mis-]ruled by rival factions for 19 years, what about the 700,000 or so Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem and the West Bank? Are they part of the "settled population" or will they be un-settled and if so by Lord Sumption and who's army? The distinguished historian of another Hundred Years' War is remarkably insensitive to the complexities of the current century long struggle between advocates of #Israel and #Palestine, both there and among their rival foreign backers. Indeed, the fact that Sumption dismissed the idea that Keir Starmer was [in part] motivated by considerations of the Muslim Labour vote suggests that he is imperceptive about what shapes politics in his own backyard.
