These attacks on struggling women are taking place at a time while at the other end of the metropolitan - some elite, rich, posh, highly-educated, globe-trotting, English/French speaking, expensively dressed women - are launching well-publicised events like #TakingBackTheNight! And their other elite and influential friends at home and abroad are going gaga over such revolutionary acts. All to show to the world that a new dawn has arrived for women in Bangladesh. “New” for which class in particular? “New” in what way? No one dares to ask!

"The day the govt resigned, there were incidents of attack and looting in at least 15 houses at the Daulatdia brothel. Now, in Dhaka, floating #SexWorkers are being attacked daily", said Aleya Begum Lily, the President of Sex Workers Network #Bangladesh. In "new" Bangladesh, the most vulnerable are being targeted by radical elements. With #Islamist groups at their strongest in 17 yrs, and with no one opposing them, young men, spurred on by their feelings of religious supremacy, have taken on the task of enforcing morality as they deem fit. Videos of them beating up sex workers are going viral. Till now, none from the Interim Govt led by @ChiefAdviserGoB, or Students Against Discrimination (SAD) movement, have protested or condemned this barbaric practice of public beatings and humiliation. As we say, #takingbackthenight: “We believe the Board’s past actions demonstrate an unwillingness to confront the endemic problems with abuse and a continued refusal to pursue true and necessary reform of the broken Olympic system.” https://t.co/92VR1fyxcX

As a mother of young girls, it is important that they and all girls and women feel safe walking alone at night! I’m #TakingBackTheNight in #OttawaCentre for them with @CalacsOttawa and @OCTEVAW who advocate for woman’s rights, and to end violence against women. #ConsentCulture
