He underwent debridement with retention followed by antibiotic suppression. Seven months later, he developed skin discoloration (photo).
Prior antibiotic use was associated with reduced yield of culture of biopsy specimen.
Longer duration of antibiotic-free period will increase diagnostic yield. A minimum of 4 days is suggested based on this study of 209 patients.
