This is a monumental achievement of research and lucid storytelling. Well worth a chunk of your reading time.

"The twenty-four-year-old gripping the Beretta 9mm pistol in his gloved hand had enjoyed many names in his short life ...."
read the rest (of this extract from #TheRevolutionists) on the early years of Carlos the Jckal here:

so the nice people at @AppleBooks chose #TheRevolutionists as a January mustlistens.
"This gripping work of narrative history takes readers inside a decade when the rules of political violence were rewritten in real time"
...and you can find it here:

@TheEconomist says #TheRevolutionists is "gripping" and a "page-turner" in review just published. which is excellent news.
reviewer (anonymous obvs) enjoys the ideas and argument, but the characters most of all. just like the author ...

#TheRevolutionists is "an excellent and gripping almost cinematic history of 70s Mideast terrorists that includes the bizarre story of Carlos the Jackal"
says the v kind @simonmontefiore who has included in his Books of 2025.
I always recommend my favourite books and always forget a couple (and many of you have written to denounce my egregious typoes) so here it is – my BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2025. The best non-fiction. @lucyhh’s The Scapegoat the life of the Duke of Buckingham and his two kings is my Book of the Year. A superb biography of President Xi’s father that is also a fresh history of modern China @JosephTorigian. Fyodor Tertitskiy’s biography of the founder of North Korea - Accidental Tyrant the Life of Kim Il-sung - is outstanding and astonishing . To Run the World: the Kremlin’s Cold War Bid for Global Power by @drradchenko is both a compelling read and a masterwork of research. Writing my modern history of the Middle East I ve been reading a lot on the Middle East naturally . Here are some wonderful books: Steve Coll on US relations with Saddam is a new biograpy of both America in the region but also the tyrant himself. @burke_jason has written an excellent and gripping almost cinematic history of 70s Mideast terrorists that includes the bizarre story of Carlos the Jackal. A history of Modern Syria @neepd which just when we need it delivers a gripping accessible but also acute history that takes us up to Sharaa and today (and even makes sense of the fissiparous feuds of Baathist cliques.) Tomorrow is Yesterday: Life Death and Pursuit of Peace in Israel Palestine by Hussein Agha & Robert Malley rejects the conventional wisdom of US policy - an insiders’ chronicle of how/ why the peace process failed – a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the Israel Palestine. Tim Blanning’s brilliant biography of Augustus the Strong is a delicious feast of 18thC power debauchery and art. I especially admired and loved two Stephen Alford’s magisterial and beautiful biographies of court and clandestine intrigue and diplomacy the Cecils and Elizabeth I and James 1 - Burghley is the first and the second is All His Spies. i also loved Clare Jackson's essays on James I - The Mirror of Great Britain - clever fascinating windows into his most intriguing singular character whom i felt i understood for the first time. @nicklloyd’s Eastern Front a History of WW1 is magisterial and superb and I cant wait for the next volume – WW1 in the Middle East. The Eagle & the Hart: the Tragedy of Richard II and Henry IV @hrcastor is both a literary and historical triumph.

"Burke also writes about an astonishing array of characters, all of whom burst off the page with a glass in one hand and Beretta in the other"
(except the Islamists ofc)

v happy this a.m. to see👇
a comprehensive and kind review of #TheRevolutionists in the Guardian.
"combines a flair for period detail – sideburns and aviator shades, berets and Beretta pistols – with impressive digests of Arab and Iranian history."

Thoroughly enjoyed #FinestHotelinKabul by @bbclysedoucet. Evocative, compelling and meticulously researched. Now about to pick up #TheRevolutionists by @burke_jason for a deep examination of 1970’s extremism.

In 1982, a US president told Israel to end a war. The lessons from then are very relevant now. It's not the threat you fought that is the problem, but the one that is coming.
A quick oped based on my new book, #TheRevolutionists (out now)

Very pleased by this very kind review of #TheRevolutionists from @simonmontefiore in the Times.

So #TheRevolutionists: The Story of the Extremists who hijacked the 1970s
is now out (finally!)
Shortlisted for #BaillieGiffordPrize
"dramatic, deeply researched" - FT
"combines journalistic rigour with spy novel–esque skullduggery" - Kirkus Reviews

so this is nuts, and very nice. My new book #TheRevolutionists has actually made it onto the Baillie Gifford prize shortlist. It is published today too. To say I'm thrilled would be something of an understatement.
“Formidable female novelists, ghastly literary men, a faith-shaken poet, eunuchs, pirates, horny wolves, international terrorists…"
