Coretta peered at the #forgotten #incantation, running her finger down the elegantly written page. Wrapped in blackened cloth with silver letters, Coretta held the Book of Hours gingerly in her hands. People had forgotten the #incantation for summoning #the_dead, but she found it. Her finger traced down the elegant calligraphy, reading each line carefully. Though in a dead language, its roots could be traced to more familiar ones. Her brother’s mangled corpse lay on a table before her with the necessary accouterments arrayed around him. Coretta took a deep breath and began the spell. By the second line, his corpse convulsed in unnatural ways. Rasping groans came from his dried vocal cords. Bands of purple light tightened around him. Creaking sinews bent him upright as more light poured inside. The ground shook. She clutched the book to her chest and kept reading until the pressure in the room left her unconscious. When she woke, he was gone. The only evidence of his departure was muddy footprints disappearing in the rain. #366FF #horrorprompt 2341 @PGPayT

#The_dead howled in protest as the #eviscerated remains whipped up into the #derecho. They landed miles away from the original crime scene, their rotting smell drawing the attention of passerbys. Police received ominous letters hinting to the crime, but without a body, they could do little. They accumulated small intestines, kidneys, and a heart. After three weeks, nothing more turned up. Yet, the letters kept coming. Detective Bernard wasted his leisure hours searching for reports of an empty corpse in the anatomy rooms. He doubted they'd admit to anything even if they'd known. It would have seen their facilities shuttered permanently. Ominous wailing assailed his dreams, bleeding over to his waking hours. He feared madness gripped him, but he daredn't speak aloud, lest he be placed in an asylum. When the letters stopped, the wailing grew louder. Too loud to ignore. His colleagues noticed. His wife murmured about a madness taking hold. He never realised when his colleagues committed him, too haunted by #the_dead. #horrorprompt 2337 @PGPayT #366FF

The #revenant stepped forth from the #tempest, cold fury of #the_dead burning in the pits where its eyes once were. It came to haunt the living, to scare their souls into the pits of damnation. A couple walked huddled together, drenched, on the beach path. The revenant only flickered in an outline from the lightning flashes. Its bitter touch burned the woman's forearm, leaving a blackened mark. The crashing waves muffled her bloodcurdling screams. The man drew his thin rapier, standing gallantly before her. It made no difference. The revenant wanted her sweet soul. It gripped her throat, flakes of her skin burning away in the whipping wind. She spluttered, unable to speak or scream. He turned around and felt instant panic upon seeing the revenant, dropping his blade and abandoning her. The woman's head lolled forward, then side-to-side. Unconsciousness gripped her, taking her to the realm of #the_dead. #horrorprompt 2332 @PGPayT #366FF

I first read The Dubliners 70 years ago and the haunting story that stayed with me, refreshed in many re-readings, was #The_Dead. When I heard in '80s that #John_Huston planned a film of it, I deemed it impossible to do justice to its subtleties. I was wrong: it's a masterpiece
