The #gelada #Theropithecus #gelada (#Cercopithecidae, #Simiiformes) is a lesser-known #primate #species #endemic to the #Ethiopian Highlands, from which at least two subspecies can be distinguished. Geladas are related to #baboons, but from which they differ biologically and morphologically. A special character (apomorphy) of the geladas is a red spot on the chest of both sexes. The hairless area turns bright red in males during the mating season. In females, red warts are then formed in the appropriate place. Unlike baboons, the #nostrils are not directed downwards, but appear to lie slightly to the side. Another very striking character of the Geladas concerns their #food preferences, because they feed mainly on #grasses, which they can grasp well with the help of well developed fine motoric skills of their hands. This food preference is unique within primates. The #socialstructure, however, is similar to that of some other Cercopithecidae. One male groups are the unit, i.e. groups with one male and several females with their offspring. In addition, however, there is another group form, which consists only of young males. A peculiarity is that it is the #females who choose their males and lead the groups. For example, if a male from a unisex group wants to join a mixed group and expel the alpha male there, it is ultimately not the outcome of the competition that is decisive, but the preferences of the females. However, I have not yet found any references to the literature on how the latter can reach a unanimous decision. As already mentioned, Geladas are endemic to the highlands of Ethiopia. There, the animals that only live on the ground are well adapted to life on the edge of steep slopes. Their climbing skills in this terrain are only surpassed by the walia ibex #Capra #walie (#Caprinae, Bovidae) occurring in the same habitat. Many aspects of the gelada biology remain largely unexplored. D. Abate and Z. Girma (2022) studied the #activitypatterns of meta gelada populations outside of protected areas, since there was hardly any data on this available. In particular, groups in the Kotu forest and associated grasslands in northern Ethiopia were studied more closely, namely in wet and dry seasons. According to this, geladas spent 61.65% of the scanned time #eating and 18.49% #moving activities. For this purpose, behaviors were recorded at 15-minute intervals between sunrise and sunset using the instantaneous scan sampling method. Food and moving activities were more frequent in the dry season than in the wet season. Most feeding activities took place in the early morning and late afternoon. The unmistakable morphological similarities with baboons of the genus Papio can, for example, based on a #phylogenetic work by D. Zinner et al. (2009) traced back to a last common ancestor (by using nuclear DNA sequences).
