Trillion-dollar problem.
Sounded the alarm (and suggested a path forward) in 2018 @TEDTalks and @HarvardBiz, then again in #theskillcode (@HarperCollins, 2024). Been building a part of the solution for the last four years. More soon...

Gen AI as Seniority-Biased Technological Change
We study whether GenAI adoption disproportionately reduces demand for junior workers using U.S. résumé + job-posting covering 65M+ workers and 280k+ firms.

A white-collar world without juniors?

Honored and delighted to get the invite from @Wharton to discuss #theskillcode.
There aren't many places in the world for absolute top-notch research and conversation on the intersection of AI and the world of work. @AIatWharton is one of them.
Don’t miss #AIHorizons: A Conversation with @mattbeane on October 18th.
Join us for a live webinar with the @UCSB prof & author of The Skill Code as he shows us how to to make intelligent technologies part of the solution, not the problem.

Well I'll be damned. Out of nowhere, the @WSJ posts a review of #theskillcode. And... it's great. Concise, thoughtful, and focused on a critical component of skill building that we often needlessly sacrifice on the altar of productivity: human connection.

Some moments take your breath away.
Seeing #theskillcode on the "local authors" shelf at Godmothers (incredible new local bookshop) easily qualified - especially since I shared it with Kristen. Dedicating it to her was one of the easiest decisions I've made.

What an honor to get the call from my alma mater @MITSloan to present on my new book #theskillcode to all alums. Would I consider it? Of course! Fun also to discover that alums from many @mit schools attend these talks - discussion will be top notch.

Nice moment to get a summary from @HarperCollins this morning - #theskillcode will be published in the following languages on the following dates:
China (Mandarin): Mid 2025
Italy: January 2025
Korea: Second half of 2025
Portugal: First half 2025
Brazil: 2025
More to come!
I grew up on public radio here in the states, and New Zealand is my favorite place I've never visited, so I was delighted that New Zealand Public (@radionz) radio reached out to interview me about #theskillcode for "Afternoons":

Like 5 or 6 others, @FastCompany excerpted #theskillcode, but they took a singular approach, obviously based on a *very* careful read. This stitches together the checklists in the book that distill decades of research on skill across over 13 disciplines: https://t.co/tid4f3pITJ
I was delighted that @Forbes reached out to learn about #TheSkillCode.
Rodger, their writer, brought some thoughtful questions and the result taught me a couple things about my own work! I'm grateful to see his writeup out there: https://t.co/hSQuOqscY2
Fun (research) facts I include alongside this one in #theskillcode: in 2006, Maxwell, Masters, and Poolton showed that even when you're not speaking, overthinking usually decreases your performance, and onlookers are more liable to label you as a "choker."
Teaching a sport can make you a worse player: Experts in sports are often not great teachers (it is hard to explain the complex intuition they have), but trying to teach can make them worse experts!
Explaining what they do makes experts overthink, which can hurt performance.

It has been a privilege to read how #TheSkillCode has resonated with so many of you.
If you haven't yet, I'd be grateful if you would leave a review on Amazon. Authenticity is all that counts.

Professionals are starting to review #TheSkillCode regularly now, and I appreciate every one. All grounded in deep knowledge of what it takes to progress in their work. Each teaches me something, and motivates me to learn more.
Glad it resonated, John. Thanks for sharing.
1/8 Reading @ucsantabarbara Professor @mattbeanes "The Skill Code" was a real eye-opener for me. 🧵

When approved paths to skill are broken - as they are in a growing number of workplaces - success requires bending rules.
Copying "cheaters" isn't appropriate, but we do need to learn from them to build new paths to skill for modern workplaces.

In #TheSkillCode🧬, I dive into why true growth comes from engaging with difficulty. It's not just about facing obstacles—it's about embracing them and pushing past comfort. Real progress happens through challenge, not in spite of it.

Rules and instruction take us only so far in our quest for skill.
In #TheSkillCode🧬, I use swearing to make the point.
Kids learn to swear by observing older people. Albert Bandura’s social learning theory explains how.

@amcafee Tired: Education = skill.
Wired: Work = skill.
Inspired: #TheSkillCode = skill.
This chart is about skill, which we mostly build as we collaborate with experts at work. Education sometimes supplies this, far too often does not.
Connection shapes our self-determined pursuit of skill. We aren't born knowing what to aim for; we derive our goals and motivation from those around us.
Competence isn't just about results. It's about our need for warm bonds of trust and respect.

We need healthy challenge to learn.
In #TheSkillCode🧬, I share Robert Bjork's study of students' studying.
If they quizzed themselves, they retained more, even though they took longer, and felt less confident.
What healthy challenge has helped you learn?
