💊HIV prevalence in Tigray:
I appreciate #THRI for taking the initiative to make an assessment of the current state of HIV prevalence in #Tigray.
According to their report, the target population were individuals aged 15-54. The sample size estimation assumed:
- for household surveys, the sample size was calculated assuming 13.7% of HIV prevalence rate, 95% confidence level, 2% level of precision, 1.5 design effects, 23.7% of the total population in the age group 15-54 years and an average household size of 4.
- This gave 1797 households or 7188 individuals (1979*4)
However, looking at the information included in their slide deck (I have the report), the study needs careful scrutiny. Please note that:
1: this is just a report & had not been published yet.
2: the sample size estimation assumes 13.7% prevalence rate which is way larger than the estimated 3% or 1.4%.
3: the estimates for sub populations may need careful weighting approaches
4: it is not clear why age restriction was made to estimate prevalence in the population? I can understand if such restrictions were made on incidence estimation.
5: how about the 40% population that’s under occupation which is more likely to have people with HIV AIDS.
I believe, before submitting this study for publication, this study needs to be looked at carefully since the reported estimates might be potentially an underestimate of the true prevalence.
