Upon arriving in #Tikrit, I could not miss the opportunity to visit the home of Umayya al-Jabara — a woman who became a symbol of courage and resistance to ISIS in #Iraq.
As it happened, that day the family was celebrating her eldest son’s graduation from a military academy. The house was filled with guests. In keeping with local tradition, the men and women sat separately, and I joined the women of the family. From the very first moment, they surrounded me with warmth and care, offered me food, told me about Iraq, and showed a sincere interest in #Azerbaijan and our people.
It was #Umayya’s husband who spoke most about her. He remembered her not as a national heroine, but as the person closest to him — a woman, a wife and a mother. Umayya was killed by a sniper in December 2014, leaving behind four sons. When I asked her husband what Umayya’s recognition as a sheikha meant to him, he replied with a single sentence: “It means everything.”
Today, each of her sons is choosing his own path. The eldest has graduated from a military academy, while another dreams of earning a master’s degree, travelling the world and visiting China one day.
I came to this home to hear Umayya’s story, but the house spoke not only of the past. It also told a story of life continuing through the destinies and dreams of her sons.
War sounds different when women tell its story — their words carry the pain of loss and children who never came home.
Today in #Tikrit, #Iraq, I met Umm Qusay, who saved 58 young Iraqi soldiers from ISIS. After losing her husband, son and nephew, she risked her own life and her family’s to shelter them and help them reach safety.
“I embraced them as my own children,” she told me. I struggled to hold back tears.
Listening to her, I thought of the strong women of #Azerbaijan — mothers who lost sons, wives who lost husbands, yet found the strength to protect their families and support others.
Embracing her, I felt deep respect for a woman whose suffering had not diminished her compassion. I want the world to hear her story and see the courage and strength of Iraqi women.
The #CampSpeicherMassacre, actually in #Tikrit, was a horrific #terrorist attack by #ISIL/#Daesh on #ThisDayInHistory in 2014. Up to 1700 #ShiaMuslim Iraqi Army cadets were gunned down. The #TikritAttack is currently the second most lethal individual act of non-state #terrorism.
