Going against the grain, here are my tips for consultants and other senior drs welcoming colleagues.
1. Respect your own expertise. You weren’t as good as you are now 5/10/15 years ago - time made you into the clinician you are. Your new colleagues haven’t had it.
Starting out as a new doctor must be terrifying.
This kind of advice would make some lot ask for help and then everyone stands around scratching their heads when something goes wrong.
If you’re not sure, ask #TipsForNewDocs

Anaesthesia is not a vascular access service and you cannot get good at “difficult” cannulas by not doing them.
Also, paediatricians and oncologists are very good at cannulation: call them instead #tipsfornewdocs
Finally, do not do this:

Respect tachycardia, esp in the hospital and in young pts who otherwise look OK.
There's always a reason: before you write it off to pain, anxiety, hypovolemia, don't miss HF, sepsis, ischemia, bleeding, PE, or alcohol withdrawal.

Book your annual leave. Take your annual leave. Turn off your emails. Mute your work WhatsApps. Let your laptop gather dust for a week. Don’t listen to anyone on Twitter who says that time off isn’t worth it. You can’t pour from an empty jug.

I will not be completing any lists for Medical Staffing about doctors who are or are not at work during the strikes.
This is not my role as a consultant or as their rota coordinator.
I suggest that other clinical colleagues think carefully before doing so.
Discharging svt without a cardiac workup took a while for me to get used to #TipsForNewDocs #tipsforolddocs #FOAMed

Far too many tweets of F1s feeling overwhelmed & crying on the job & it’s barely been a week!
They’ve not erred or caused harm but we’ve been unkind & let them down
Let’s try & help make them feel valued & appreciated. It doesn’t take much & it will save a life

With #juniordoctors changeover tomorrow just a reminder to #medtwitter.
MANDATORY E-LEARNING IS WORK.
You shouldn’t be expected to complete it in your own time. Do it at work, or ensure you’ll get time off in lieu before you do it.

Just a reminder to any #juniordoctors on #medtwitter that need it this changeover week. (And anyone managing their rotas also)
Rota safety rules apply ALL the time. Even over changeover & especially when you’re changing rotas.

And please don’t refer to it as “the outside hospital” - “referring facility” is perfect thank you. #Tipsfornewdocs #tipsforolddocs
Dear everyone working in large tertiary care hospitals...
👉Please do not assume that just because we work in a small hospital that we do not know what we are doing.
We all trained in the same places and have more experience with sick patient than you might think.

@DrBenLovell #tipsforolddocs send your juniors for breaks. Give spontaneous positive feedback. Bring cake to teaching sessions.
Can we resurrect this?
#tipsforolddocs
In the interest of balance, anyone got any #tipsforolddocs?
How about: if you insist on going along to the juniors’ big social drinks night out, then get a round in and bugger off early and leave them to it
