Thank you Anne Moore for all your support for our Trans Symposium! #ucltranssym
Shout out to our very own Anne Moore cochair of β¦@UCLoutβ©. What a π #visible #rolemodel https://t.co/wm9tHblKrx
Great thread with some of the brilliant content from #ucltranssym today. Huge pity not to hear from @MelzDot after they were met with transphobia on their way in - hope @ucl can take structural action necessary to sort themselves out.
Very excited to be at 'Trans Studies, Trans Lives: Past, Present, Future' today. An exciting utopian start as @yao_christine explains how she and her colleagues felt compelled to organise this event in response to the recent consultation on the Gender Recognition Act #ucltranssym
Positive and inspirational second keynote from MJ Barker on trans time travellers and positive views of good use of trans superpowers! πͺπ» #ucltranssym
Trans time travelling, including second-adolescence, trans age different than age since birth, trans people looking younger than we are, a few takes on how we are bending time by @megjohnbarker #ucltranssym
Last paper before the second keynote is titled βThe fantastic duplicity of queer bodies in Sci-fi and fantasy fictionβ by Felix Kawitzky - I have been excited for this the whole day #ucltranssym
Well done to @ucl on putting on this fantastic symposium: Trans Studies, Trans Lives. Some really awesome speakers including @srudy2, LJ Thuringer, Aiden Greenall, @Ms_L_Marshall, and @megjohnbarker. It is a real privilege being here. #ucltranssym
Follow @megjohnbarker who is currently tweeting from #ucltranssym if your TL is suddenly empty of trans scholarship
Had to head home after my morning at #ucltranssym but I just wanted to briefly thank all the speakers and the organisers. It's given me a lot to think about and it's lovely to see people in academia engaging in radical politics. Good luck for the rest of the day!
'Why should there be a debate at all. It's just a life'. A wonderful wonderful talk #ucltranssym
Whittle points out that this recent 'debate' about trans rights has actively curtailed trans people's rights. That his birth certificate has been downgraded as legal identification because it was not produced within 6 months of his birth #ucltranssym
Self-identification is a ridiculous issue to be debating because we have always done it. Whittle finds the debate to be fundamentally flawed because it implies self-identification is a threat to others rather than a protection of the self #ucltranssym
'I'm not even sure gender exists, except in terms of something that we might want to celebrate about ourselves' - Whittle connects the nonexistence of gender to the nonexistence of race #ucltranssym
Was looking forward to @MelzDotβs presentation on Black Trans Masculinities: Redefinition as Survival as an intervention into whiteness. But instead #ucltranssym became a site that only illustrated the difficulty of that survival. We need to do better
Racism, transphobia is a structural issue, especially at a colonial institution like ours. There is much work we have to do given our complicity. Also gender binary is a colonial construct and the dearth of QTIPOC presenters points to this #ucltranssym
In behalf of #ucltranssym organizers, we apologize to @MelzDot & all although apology is insufficient. Uni staff were briefed but violence still happened. The security guard, who was providing temporary cover, has been removed from desk and event security have been re-briefed.
@MelzDot @ucl Is this being sorted? If not I want to leave the conference in solidarity tbh #ucltranssym
This is awful and demonstrates how deeply embedded transphobia is even in those few institutions within which scholars are doing the work of trans studies. An important and traumatic context for today's #ucltranssym
Really excited to be speaking at #ucltranssym this afternoon @yourlollydealer and I will show our short film 'STEPOUT' π @malle
