#WorldCup2026 #underdogtale #keepingthefaith This is Kevin Rodriguez of Ecuador, rising to provide an assist for their winning goal against Germany. The image shared is deliberately portrait like, because it captures a bit of a modern-day fairytale. Just before the Qatar World Cup in 2022, Ecuador was set to play a couple of friendlies, and were short on reserve players for the team to practice with. Their then coach-Gustavo Alfaro-called Rodriguez out of the blue to join the squad. Playing for only a second division side domestically at that time, being virtually unknown, Rodriguez gave it his all in those sessions, impressing both the coach and his team mates. So much so that he has been around the national squad ever since. Yesterday, he rose again, against the odds to hover over the taller German defenders, and flick on a decisive pass which had Plata scripting the decisive strike of the match. And yet, metaphorically, Rodriguez rose, not just in the penalty box, but in the estimation of millions across the world. Portraying an inspiring example of how one should grab opportunity with both hands-unquestioningly and unflinchingly. Joining just as a reserve player often is turned down by many. It hurts their ego and self-image. But Rodriguez was willing to do just about anything to wear his national colours. Perhaps that desire, that all consuming feeling of patriotism, added wind to his wings as he soared above the rest. And lent more than a helping hand (or should it be head😊?) to his country’s further progress in this tournament.
